The Special Olympics

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Torch Run

Officers from Palo Alto have participated in the annual international Torch Run supporting the Special Olympics since 2004. The mission of the Law Enforcement Torch Run® (LETR) for Special Olympics is to increase awareness and raise funds for the Special Olympics movement.

The original Law Enforcement Torch Run began in 1981 in Whichita, Kansas after police sought a way to involve officers with the local Special Olympics. That first run involved six officers and did not raise any money. Last year the Torch Run raised over $30 million for the Special Olympics programs. This year over 85,000 law enforcement officers will carry the “Flame of Hope” torch across 35 nations to raise funds and awareness for the games.

OGHOfficers' Give Hope (OGH)

Officers' Give Hope is a multi-agency law enforcement effort dedicated to hosting marrow donor drives in the hopes of finding a match for those patients awaiting a life-saving transplant.  Officers' Give Hope has located donors for patients throughout the United States suffering from Leukemia and other blood diseases.  Those who have participated i the donation process have described it as an incredible experience.
